Watt’s Happening: Clean energy Canada

By Don Pettit

Clean Energy Canada, a Vancouver-based think tank, has released a new report on the growth of clean energy in Canada, and the results are surprising. Canada’s clean energy capacity has grown by 93 percent over the past 5 years, with direct clean energy jobs in 2013 pulling into the lead ahead of total direct oil sands jobs! (more…)

Watt’s Happening: Canadian Update

By Don Pettit

CANADIAN UPDATE

It just makes sense to move to renewable energy sources like wind, solar and geothermal. Once the energy-harvesting infrastructure is in place, the energy source will last forever since the “fuel” is supplied and constantly renewed by nature – the sun shines, the wind blows, and the Earth emits heat from its molten core. (more…)

GREENING THE GRID

Readers may be expecting, as promised, an update on my recently completed 5.6 kilowatt solar power array that is sitting up on my roof waiting for an electrical inspection. Well, I’m still waiting, but it is close. Very close. (more…)

Watt’s Happening: powering the planet with renewables

By Don Pettit

MYTH #3: “We can’t possibly power the whole planet on renewables because there’s not enough of it and it’s intermittent and unreliable.” WRONG!

Renewable energy has always seemed kind of magical to me. Stick a wind turbine up in the air or let the sun shine on a solar panel and out comes electricity. That’s pretty cool. (more…)

Watt’s Happening: Where Does the Electricity Go?

by Don Pettit

It’s rare that we get to see our electricity being made. It usually comes from some far and distant unknown source. Plug something into an outlet, and there’s the power. The rest is a mystery. (more…)

Watt’s Happening: Busting the myth “Wind Turbines are Bad for Birds”

by Don Pettit

I’m starting out this new renewable energy column “Watt’s Happening?” by busting a few common myths around the cleanest energy sources ever invented: wind and solar. Lets jump right into a hotly debated wind turbine controversy: does wind power harm or benefit birds? (more…)
